SCIATICA/BACK PAIN

Signs and Symptoms

  • Lower back pain accompanied by radiating leg pain below the knee.

Differential Diagnosis

  • Piriformis syndrome - Posterior buttock pain. May be caused by leg length inequality.
  • Mechanical lower back pain - May be caused by leg length inequality.
  • Sprain/strains - due to trauma.

Etiology (Cause)

  • Disc bulging causing pressure on nerve roots. May be sudden onset from a bending/twisting maneuver. May have past history of lower back pain that resolved.

Treatment

  • Orthotics
  • Physiotherapy therapy modalities (ice, massage, ultrasound).
  • Manual therapy (motion release, foot, knee and pelvic adjustments).
  • Lower back and abdominal strengthening.
