At SDRI we attempt to incorporate the most available
scientific research concerning pronation, running injuries, orthotics
and running shoe construction. Most shoe retailers rely on pseudo-science
provided to them by the manufactures who are looking to control
foot motion, more specifically pronation. Their concept is pronation
is pathological and should be controlled or stopped. We understand
normal biomechanics and that pronation is a necessary part of the
normal gait cycle. Furthermore, over-pronation can be measured and
should not be a subjective opinion given by the salesperson.
If you make custom orthotics, putting your patients in the right
shoe is even more important. Most shoe retailers have little, if
any, education on the concept of orthotics intervention. In fact,
some dismiss the need entirely and seek to control foot motion with
shoes. Putting the patient fitted with orthotics into a stability
or motion control shoe may provide too much control, resulting in
discomfort and potential injury. The patient may not understand
that it is the wrong shoe type causing discomfort and not the fault
of the orthotics. We have shoes that take into consideration the
width and depth of orthotics and provide no additional motion control.
