Signs and Symptoms
- Anterior or posterior lower leg pain. The
pain is a deep ache that is made worse with running.
Differential Diagnosis
- Tibial Stress Fractures – Usually not seen
with x-ray. Bone scan may be necessary.
- Compartment Syndrome – Pain may begin
within 10 minutes following exercise. Tenderness and swelling
over the involved compartment. Athlete may feel pain and tingling
along involved nerve. Rest for 4-8 weeks or possible surgery (fasciotomy)
is warranted.
Etiology (Cause)
- External variables (hills)
- Shoes
- Excessive pronation
Treatment
- Orthotics
- Arch taping/leg taping
- Stretching
- Physiotherapy therapy modalities (ice, massage,
ultrasound).
- Manual therapy (motion release, foot adjustments)
